My advise do the homework and understand the coupon, this take time but you will be in and out without the unconfortable feeling at the register or having to call the manager for a void. Remember some stores announce "customer needs a void" over the load speaker and people are in line waiting and knowing you are the reason for the hold up.

Another tip: make a list per transaction if more than one and only buy what is on the list. if you see something else you want go home and do the research on that item.

I have only been doing it for 3 weeks now and I only buy what I use. many great deals out there, but I only want to bring home what I know I will use and when I see a great deal I buy a 6-12 month supply of it. Today I picked up snuggles and Tide from Family Dollar. Saving $41 with an OOP of $24.

So to answer one of your questions, I would return the items and start over by doing the homework on those items to maximize you savings.
