Men's urbanwear store to open near Vallejo's Target
A new upscale urbanwear men's store opens at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Vallejo Corners shopping center, and its owner says he hopes to clothe the disadvantaged.
Fatt City Apparel is Vallejo native Hanny Bekhit's second Solano County store. the first opened several months ago in Fairfield's Westfield Solano Shopping Mall.
"I'm trying to figure out a way to give shoppers a discount for trade-ins on gently used clothes that can then be donated to needy Vallejo residents," Bekhit, 32, said.
The single father of two said he's always liked the name Fatt City, and, in fact, has operated Fatt City Entertainment -- a hip-hop recording firm -- for the past decade.
Branching out into urbanwear seemed like the natural thing, he said.
"I figured I need a business that can create a revenue stream for myself and I always liked fashion -- I like to dress nice -- and I thought I might as well try to bring nice clothes to Vallejo," he said.
Bekhit said he tried to make a go of a similar store on Vallejo's Broadway Street a while ago, but it was a "bad location," so he moved to the mall.
"I think it could be good in Vallejo," said Hank Smith of Fairfield, who works in the store's Fairfield mall location.
"A lot of people from Vallejo don't come to the mall that much," Smith said. "It will be good for people with summer jobs who want to wear this type of clothes at affordable prices."
Fatt City likely will be the most "high-end" urban clothing store
in Vallejo, Bekhit said.
"We carry brands no one else carries around here," he said.
Fatt City sells men's pants, shirts, T-shirts, sweats and hats with brands like Akoo, Levi's, Black label, Parish, true Religion Jeans, Mek Denim Jeans, Live Mechanics, LRG, Ed Hardy, Rocawear and New Era hats. Sizes range from medium to 5X, and prices range from about $5 to about $300, he said.
While business has been growing since opening at the mall, Bekhit said it will be good to be home.
