Savvy Shopper: Burlington flea market gives buyers head start

Organizers of Burlington's huge flea market are having a presale June 19.

It's designed to make room for the five-day sale the Hospice League of Alamance-Caswell is holding in August.

The presale will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the former Western Electric Plant at 204 N. Graham-Hopedale Road.

Summertime savings

Get 25 percent off outerwear and summer home accessories in June at Mechelle's Resale Shoppe (403 State St., Greensboro; 574-4496).

That includes new items such as hats, scarves, straw bags and sunglasses.

The store is at State Street Station, which has specialty shops, boutiques, restaurants and galleries housed in refurbished 1920s buildings.

Walmart makeovers

Two Walmart stores in Greensboro are getting makeovers.

Walmart at 4424 W. Wendover Ave. is getting completely remodeled from the inside out. the store is hiring about 60 additional workers to help with the remodel, which began may 16. It's expected to be finished in July.

The new design was based on feedback from customers, according to a company press release.

It will feature wider aisles, low-profile shelving, bright interior paint scheme and lighting, and signs that will be easier to read.

All of the store's departments will be updated, including adding new shelves, signs, floors and product assortments. the store will remain open during the renovations.

Most of the construction and moving work will be done during the overnight hours.

Plans are also in the works to renovate Walmart at 3738 Battleground Ave.

Remodeling is tentatively scheduled to begin in July.

New clothing shipment

A large spring clothing shipment recently arrived at Sylvia's Outlet (4654 U.S. 29, Greensboro; 621-6466).

Clothes are from designers including Denim & co. Susan Graver, Rachel Zoe, Bob Mackie and Basso.

Most tops and pants are less than $15.

Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Yard sale fundraiser

Get deals on clothes and household items including electronics, video games, CDs and DVDs during a yard sale at Grimsley High School.

The sale is from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday outside the school's main gym.

Proceeds will be used to buy equipment and supplies for the JV and varsity football teams.

If you'd like to donate, contact head football coach Martin Samek at sammyk30@ yahoo.com by Friday to make arrangements.

Stores that offer value

Costco offers the best bang for your buck, according to a recent Consumer Reports reader survey.

More than 30,000 shoppers who participated in the magazine's survey gave the membership warehouse club chain high marks regarding price and value.

The survey examined 11 of America's most popular chain stores.

Shoppers viewed the quality of merchandise among the store chains as a mixed bag.

Only Dillard's and Costco earned above average scores in general. Walmart was the sole chain to receive below average quality scores in more than half of the product categories.

Price cut on iPhone

It seemed like only yesterday that I thought I got a pretty good deal on an iPhone.

Sure, it was a refurbished model when I bought it for $99 last year.

Now, for the price I paid for a used phone with half as much brain power, you can get your hands on a brand-new iPhone.

Walmart will begin selling the 16-gigabyte iPhone 3GS -- the newest model -- for $97. It currently costs $197.

It does come with a catch, however. you have to commit to a two-year contract with AT&T.

You also may not have the newest model for much longer.

That's because a price drop is typically a sign that Apple is getting ready to unveil a newer one.

Feeling good for free

A couple of interesting tidbits in Men's Health's June issue about exercise that won't cost you a thing.

Drinking ice-cold water before and during exercise can improve endurance by about 23 percent.

I recently started taking this advice to heart.

My jogs didn't suddenly become a cakewalk. But I figured it can't hurt, right?

Runners who also took it outside reported feeling 225 percent more satisfied compared with those who ran on indoor treadmills, according to a Utah study the magazine cited.
